Md. – Maryland’s Comptroller Brooke Lierman testifying on new tax legislation for Maryland residents.
The package of tax legislation has been presented to the House of Delegates and House Ways and Means Committee.
The goal is to protect Maryland Tax Payers from scams, but also to get the word out about tax credits, like the senior tax credit and the earned income tax credit.
Under House Bill 451, funding would also be increased for partnerships with AARP and Cash Campaign.
“We have introduced legislation to increase the amount of funding for some of those partners including extra dollars so rural areas have access to that assistance.”
Another piece of this package is HB 452, otherwise call the Stop Scam Tax Preparers act.
This directs the Maryland Department of Labor to oversee the tax preparers’ board in order to strengthen enforcement on tax scammers.
“We see too many people every year taken advantage of by unscrupulous actors acting as seasoned tax preparers who are not.”
Comptroller Lierman is hoping to earn the support of the general assembly and the governor.
